Music Video Comparison

The two music videos I’ll be analysing are Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ and My Chemical Romance’s ‘Welcome To The Black Parade. Both music videos are narratively driven.

Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ was the first music video to be seen as a small movie. This can be made known by the length of the music video as well as how it’s structured, unlike newer music videos this music video contains areas of dialogue. The pacing in the video also makes it feel like a short film.

My Chemical Romance are famous for creating concept records, a concept record is an album which has a story arc running over every song on the album. This means each song off the record would have a connection or add to the storyline. In music videos made on this album, they connect to the overall story. Welcome To The Black Parade music video show cases an event in the story.

Welcome To The Black Parade’s narrative centres around the protagonists’ transition from our world into the afterlife.
